 2008 Initiative  Achievement
 Review options for second data centre

ITS have investigated two options for a second data centre.

  1. An onsite data centre located at Caulfield Campus

    2.   An outsorced joint venture which has proceeded to RFP

 Continue initiative for a shared Data Centre with CSIRO at Clayton- planning, funding etc. Negotiations are on hold pending the decision from above.
 Implement energy saving measures within current data centres e.g., lighting, air handling. During 2008 the lighting was replaced in the Clayton data centre with more energy effecient models
 Server consolidation within physical ITS Data Centres- track and report progress

The business case within Shared Service initiative has been agreed upon.

 Further the plans to implement server virtualisation across the University   
 Student environment- Review and implement power saving measures in computer laboratories and pilot "model" green labs.

For first semester 2009 one student computer lab at each Caulfield and Clayton will be fitted out with Gold rated EPEAT computers as well as having duplex printing as a default for all computers

Create metrics and baseline data to assess and monitor Monash's energy consumption.

KPGM won the tender and in their final report recommended 14 'must have' KPIs across the areas of; energy consumption, purchasing, data centre management and e-waste disposal, for Monash to consider adopting.

 Conduct an education campaign to encourage computer users to implement personal power saving measures (e.g.. turn off screen savers).
  •  A green logout message from my.monash was deployed in 2008, asking students to switch off their computers if no longer in use
  • The wallpaper on ITS student lab computers was alos changed to an environmental message
