Hi-tech medical learning environment for Gippsland

The recently opened Gippsland Medical School includes a $10 million teaching and learning space where students’ practical sessions can be viewed, recorded and reviewed via control panels throughout the seven separate teaching spaces.

Students can practice on the electronic dummy, SimMan® and the data changes to vital signs recorded. Nothing is missed and the ceiling mounted cameras can zoom in to clearly show the hairs on the back of students' hands. Video and audio is directly record to two terabyte capacity servers installed to meet storage requirements.

Initially the project design was to create a learning environment where student practical sessions could be filmed and shared for greater learning. On the recommendation of the Teaching Spaces Facilities Unit (TFSU) the project expanded to include:

  • recording live video and audio
  • capturing and backing up all data to servers.

As no similar system existed in Australia. TFSU and the supplier of a surveillance system used by Crown Casino worked together to meet the medical school's requirements. The project took eight months to develop and complete.
