Real time captioning for hearing impaired students introduced
A real time captioning service for hearing impaired students was introduced
to university teaching and meeting rooms in April. The Teaching Facilities
Support Unit (TFSU) and the Disability Liaison Unit worked with the Australian
Caption Centre (ACC) to trial and implement the service.
By using a hand held or wireless lapel microphone, the sound output is
sent to the ACC (via a telephone line) which then transcribes the information
received. Our students can then access the real time transcript via a
web browser (and the ACC website) on their notebook which is connected
via the Monash wireless network. The students also receive a written transcript
from the ACC.
The Faculty of Science and the School of Biomedical Sciences are using
the service on the Clayton campus. The Caulfield campus will be the next
site to be linked to the service.
