Web page definitions

Official pages

Official pages include the top-level Monash homepage, the centrally-maintained navigational pages, official publications such as handbooks, general university information, directories and the web sites of faculties, departments, centres administrative areas and other groups considered part of the university.

Course materials and professional pages (pages listing individuals' research interests, professional interests, publications etc) are considered official pages and should generally be included within official web sites, rather than being private pages.

Official pages must include:

  • the word "Monash" as part of the page title tag
  • a link to the top-level Monash home page.
  • a link to the faculty or department top-level home page.
  • The name/title of the person authorising the page.
  • The name/title of the page-maintainer
  • A mailto: link to one or both of the above and/or to a generic enquiry email address.
  • An indication of the currency of the page: either the latest update date or an expiry date
  • A standard copyright statement which includes a link to the official page caution. For example: see the copyright statement at the bottom of this page.

Students' coursework pages

Students' Coursework Pages are considered private pages unless a lecturer or department wishes to place the pages on an official server. Students' coursework pages placed on an official web-site must include:

  • a link to the top-level Monash home page.
  • a link to the appropriate course/subject homepage.
  • The name of the page-maintainer
  • A mailto: link to the student or the sponsoring lecturer and/or to a generic enquiry email address.
  • An indication of the currency of the page: either the latest update date or an expiry date
  • An indication that the page was written as a course-requirement and a link to the coursework disclaimer.

Affiliated pages

Affiliated Pagesare those pages which do not fit the definition of an official page but have been deemed suitable for mounting on an official web site. This includes but is not limited to professional association pages, some community information pages and scholarly journals. They require authorisation by a Dean or HOD on a case-by-case basis before they can be hosted on a Monash server.

Scholarly journals may also be placed on the university's journal server. In this case approval is sought from the webmaster's office.

Affiliated pages must include:

  • a link to the top-level Monash home page.
  • a link to the sponsoring faculty/dept top-level home page.
  • The name/title of the person authorising the page.
  • The name/title of the page-maintainer
  • A mailto: link to one or both of the above and/or to a generic enquiry email address.
  • An indication of the currency of the page: either the latest update date or an expiry date

Affiliated pages must not:

  • State that they are copyright Monash University when the pages are being hosted by Monash for a non-Monash entity. This will probably be the case for most affiliated pages.
  • Link to the official page caution (a suitable disclaimer statement is being developed)

Personal pages

Personal, or private pages are those pages produced by students and staff which do not fit any of the above categories. They include, but are not limited to, personal information and personal interests. They may not include any commercial information, and must not under any circumstances be used for business-related activities.

They cannot be placed on official web-sites. Any web server that hosts official and private pages must make a clear and unambiguous distinction between the official site and the private page area.

Private pages must include a link to the Personal page disclaimer. Ideally it should be forced onto every private page by the web server. If this is not possible, webmasters must ensure that private-page authors:

  • Include the text "This is a personal page maintained by the author."
  • Include a link to the disclaimer.
