Monash Chat - a powerful instant messaging tool for staff!

The Integrated Collaboration Environment (ICE) Program is pleased to release 'Monash Chat' - the instant messaging component of the Monash e-Meeting (Lotus Sametime) service.

Monash Chat is an addition to our suite of collaboration services already available, including Monash Messaging (Lotus Notes email, calendar, contacts and task management), room-based videoconferencing and IP telephony.

Please note: File transfer not available via wireless. Uploading of ID photo coming soon.

1. What is Monash Chat?

Monash Chat facilitates online, instant text communication for members of the Monash community. Like other instant messaging tools, users can set availability preferences, transfer files to colleagues and conduct muti-way chats using text and emoticons.

Part of the powerful Monash e-Meeting (Lotus Sametime) collaboration toolset, Monash Chat is the first release of tools that will be further supplemented by video and voice functionality, online meetings and screen-sharing. More information to come soon - watch this space!

2. Who can use Monash Chat?

Monash Chat is available to all Monash staff using the Lotus Notes email client v8.0.2 and above only.

For staff using an earlier version of Lotus Notes (eg. v8.0.1), you will need to upgrade your client.

Please contact your local IT support for assistance.

3. How do I set up Monash Chat?

Getting connected to Monash Chat is simple and takes only a few minutes.  For step-by-step instructions, please refer to:

Note: Online learning is also available for Monash Chat!

To access using Lotus Notes workstation client

  1. Start Lotus Notes
  2. Select the Open button to dispay the Open List and choose Lotus Notes Learning for from the bookmark bar select Lotus Notes Learning

To access using a web browser

  1. Log into the Monash portal
  2. Click on the link Learn about Monash Message (Lotus Notes)
  3. Click on the link: using Sametime

4. I was part of the pilot group for Monash Chat - what do I need to know?

Releasing Monash Chat to the broader community of Lotus Notes users at Monash will result in a short period of downtime (from 7:00am to 8:00am on Thursday, 13 August).

For those staff already using Monash Chat, no action is required except to save your contacts list as contact lists will be reset during the switchover to a new server.

So that you do not need to manually re-enter your contacts, you are advised to save and export your contacts prior to 7:00pm on Thursday, 13 August.
