Training notes

If you are merely looking to familiarise yourself with using Netscape Messenger (email), the best place to start looking is the email training notes.

Corrupt mail folders

Netscape Messenger creates an index file for each mail folder and keeps it on your local computer. These index files often become corrupt and need to be recreated. If the folders are located on the server, check them using the WebMail client.

The WebMail client doesn't use the index files that are on your computer, and should show you the correct state of your server mail folders.

If the folders in Netscape Messenger appear to be corrupt, but the folder in the WebMail client looks ok, try the following.

To recreate the folder index files:

  • Close all Netscape windows
  • Your user profile directory can be found at C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\<your username>. Make a backup of that directory.
  • For mail folders that are on the server, the index files can be found in the imapmail\mail.monash.edu.au directory. Local mail folders are in the mail directory. Change to the relevant directory and delete all the .snm and .sbd files. Do not delete the entire directory as the directory also contains any mail filtering rules that you have created.
  • Restart Netscape Messenger. The index files will be recreated when you next open up your mail folders.

How can I find how much disk space I am using?

To find out how much disk space a folder uses:

  • Open Netscape Messenger
  • In the list of folders, right click on the folder that you want to check and choose Folder Properties
  • The total amount of disk space that the folder uses will be shown

To find out how much disk space you are using in total, see the Mail account summary section of this FAQ.

How can I change my Authcate password from within Netscape Communicator?

To change your Authcate password:

  • In the index on the left of screen, click on Password
  • Type your current password and your new password in the spaces provided
  • Click on Change Password

Mail account summary

The mail account summary shows you:

  • Email addresses that will deliver mail to your MMS account
  • The amount of disk space that you are using on the mail server
  • The amount of space (quota) that you are allowed to use on the mail server

To see this information, click on Account Summary in the index on the left of screen.
