Email Spoofing

If you receive spam that appears to have come from a Monash email address, then it could be an email spoof.

It is possible for Spammers to hide their real email addresses and replace these with an incorrect address. Sometimes the incorrect address is fake, but could also be an innocent person's real email address. This behaviour is widely known as "email spoofing"

To accurately judge whether an email has been spoofed can be a complex and technical process. If you feel the spam has not been spoofed and appears to have come from a Monash email address, then please forward the email as an attachment to abuse@monash.edu.au (do not copy and paste as this breaks important message trails). We can then examine the email to see if it originated from a Monash address. A designated workgroup that monitors internally generated spam will act upon any reports of users abusing the email system in this way.
