Spam filtering information for Staff

Staff have been able to filter Spam emails on their email client (e.g. Mozilla, Netscape, Outlook) since September 2003. Since June 2004, staff have been able to direct the Staff email servers to filter Spam emails prior to being delivered to their INBOX.

New: Spam filtering is now enabled by default for all new email accounts. More information

Updated 4/5: Spam filtering is now enabled by default for all staff and role email accounts.

Spam filtering instructions for Staff

Staff can now filter Spam by one of two methods:

* Server-side Spam filtering (recommended)
* Client-side Spam filtering

Read on for information about the differences between the two methods and which you should select if you want to implement spam filtering.

Server-side Spam filtering (default) is an easy means of filtering spam emails into a special 'Spam' folder in your email account. The filtering occurs on the server before you see the emails, and will operate whether you use an email client (such as Netscape Communicator) or one of the two web-based interfaces (WebMail (http://mail.monash.edu.au) or my.monash portal (http://my.monash.edu.au)) to read your staff email.

To enable or disable server-side spam filtering, please read the following guide.
Server-side filtering instructions

Client-side Spam filtering uses filters that are created within your email client (e.g. Netscape Communicator, Mozilla Thunderbird, Microsoft Outlook) that redirect emails that Monash has 'marked' as Spam to a specific 'Spam' folder.

To enable client-side spam filtering, please follow the specific instructions for your client.
Client-side filtering instructions

Which method of filtering should you choose: server-side or client side?

ITS recommends that staff use server-side filtering. Server-side filtering is by far the simpliest to set-up and works transparently to filter emails before you see them. If you find that server-side filtering doesn't offer enough flexibility in Spam folder choice etc. then client-side filtering is the option to provide this flexibility.
