Managing IMAP folder subscription

Your IMAP email client (eg Thunderbird) will display the folders in your account to which you are "subscribed".

Generally, this will be all of the folders in your account, and only the folders in your account. However, in some situations you may find that there are folders in your account that do not appear in Thunderbird, or folders that appear in Thunderbird that are not in your account. This can be fixed by subscribing to (or unsubscribing from) the offending folders.

Subscribing

To subscribe to mail folders in Thunderbird, Mozilla and Netscape Messenger:

  1. Go to File->Subscribe.
  2. You will be presented with a list of folders in your account. You may need to click Refresh to force this list to be updated.
  3. If you have folders inside folders in your account, you will need to expand these until you can see every folder in your account, by clicking the "+" symbols to the left of the folder names. This is because subscribing to a folder does not automatically subscribe to all the folders inside it -- you have to subscribe to every folder individually.
  4. Check the box next to any folders you need to subscribe to, or select the folders and click Subscribe.
  5. Click OK.

Unsubscribing

To unsubscribe from mail folders in Thunderbird, Mozilla or Netscape Messenger:

  1. Go to File->Subscribe.
  2. You will be presented with a list of folders in your account. You may need to click Refresh to force this list to be updated.
  3. If you have folders inside folders in your account, you will need to expand these until you can see every folder in your account, by clicking the "+" symbols to the left of the folder names. This is because unsubscribing from a folder does not automatically unsubscribe from all the folders inside it -- you have to unsubscribe from every folder individually.
  4. Check the box next to any folders you need to unsubscribe from, or select the folders and click Unsubscribe.
  5. Click OK.
