Pocket PC 2003 - Using ActiveSync Backup/Restore
Backup Process
1. Microsoft ActiveSync
To begin the backup process, open MS ActiveSync, click Tools
from the menu bar and select Backup/Restore from
the dropdown list

2. Backup/Restore
Select the appropriate backup method from the corresponding radio
button.
Note: It is recommended that the default backup path is not modified. Once
the backup is complete, it is advisable to create a another copy of the resulting
backup file and place it on an alternate storage device in case of PC failure.
Click Back Up Now to begin the backup process

3. Backup In Progress
To ensure the integrity of the backup data, do not interupt this
process or use the PDA while this process is running.

Restore Process
Before beginning the restoration process, it is advisable to verify the
existance of a valid backup file in the default location of the PDA's
activesync profile.
IE: C:\Documents and Settings\Local Username\Application
Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles\Pocket PC Profile name\backup.stg
If the PDA has suffered a failure and required a hard reset (and therefore
erasing its memory), Activesync will prompt to either setup a new connection
or connect as "Guest". It is advisable to initially connect
as Guest and follow the restore procedures below. If this is unsuccessful,
setup the device again using a different profile name. When this has completed,
the backup (backup.stg) file will need to be copied from either alternate
storage media as described in backup process, Step 2 or:
C:\Documents and Settings\Local Username\Application
Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles\Original Pocket PC Profile
name\backup.stg
to
C:\Documents and Settings\Local Username\Application
Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles\New Pocket PC Profile name\backup.stg
Please Note: If restoration is successful, the PDA will once again be recognised
by Microsoft ActiveSync as Original Pocket PC Profile name.

To begin the restoration process, open MS ActiveSync, click Tools
from the menu bar and select Backup/Restore from
the dropdown list.

2. Backup/Restore
Choose the Restore tab
Click Restore Now to continue.

3. Proceed with Restore?
Click the Restore button to begin the restoration
process
At the completion of this process, a soft reset of the PDA will
be required.
