Summary of Service Types
Preferred services
| Basic Service |
Dedicated 10Mbit/s or 100 Mbits/s or 1000Mbit/s UTP Ethernet |
| Enhanced Service |
Resilient or Dedicated Ethernet services at 100Mbit/s or 1000Mbit/s UTP Ethernet. |
| Blade Center Service |
Resilient or Dedicated Ethernet services for blade servers at 1000Mbit/s UTP Ethernet |
Unsupported services
FDDI, Token Ring & ATM
Basic service: Dedicated 10Mbit/s or 100Mbit/s or 1000Mbit/s UTP Ethernet
A single end user-device has sole use of the 10Mbit/s or 100 Mbit/s or 1000Mbit/s port, provided the NIC card on the device is capable of supporting the speeds.
| Modes |
The port supports collision-free full-duplex & half duplex. However it is recommended that at 10Mbit/s, a Half Duplex mode be selected and at 100Mbit/s or 1000Mbit/s a full duplex mode is used. |
| Capacity |
The edge network and uplinks are dimensioned so that each Ethernet service has its own effectively-guaranteed 10Mbit/s or 100Mbit/s or 1000Mbit/s of capacity into the core network, providing the environment for bandwidth-intensive and delay-sensitive applications. |
| Capability |
The uplinks are dimensioned to accommodate for bandwidth-intensive and delay-sensitive applications. |
| Flexibility |
VLAN membership will be port-based. |
Enhanced Service: Resilient or Dedicated 100Mbit/s or 1000Mbit/s UTP Ethernet
A single server can either have a dedicated 100Mbit/s or 1000Mbit/s connection to the network, or have a resilient feed from the switch towards the device, thus ensuring a "no single-point-of-failure", Highly Available (HA) environment. This service is typically suited to servers, and is available only in Central Server locations.
| Modes |
The port supports collision-free full-duplex & half duplex. However it is recommended that at both speeds, a full duplex mode is used. |
| Capacity |
The network is dimensioned so that each Ethernet service has its own effectively-guaranteed 100Mbit/s or 1000Mbit/s of capacity into the core network, providing the environment for bandwidth-intensive and delay-sensitive applications. |
| Capability |
The uplinks are dimensioned to accommodate this environment for bandwidth-intensive and delay-sensitive applications. |
| Flexibility |
VLAN membership will be port-based. |
Blade Center Service: Resilient 1000Mbit/s UTP Ethernet
Each Blade Server can have a standard resilient 1000Mbit/s connection via the Ethernet switch modules within the Blade Center. The switches themselves will be connected resiliently to the network, thus ensuring a "no single-point-of-failure", Highly Available (HA) environment. This service is only applicable to blade servers, and is only available at the ITS Data Centers and Faculty server rooms if required.
| Modes |
The port supports collision-free full-duplex |
| Capacity |
The network is dimensioned so that each Ethernet service has its own effectively-guaranteed 1000Mbit/s of capacity into the core network, providing an environment for bandwidth-intensive and delay-sensitive applications. |
| Capability |
The uplinks are dimensioned to accommodate this environment for bandwidth-intensive and delay-sensitive applications. |
| Flexibility |
VLAN membership will be port-based only |
