GrangeNetMigration from GrangeNet to Monash Production Network GrangeNet will cease operation at the end of 2006. To address this change, ITS will commence migration of Grangenet users to the Monash production network starting from the 15th of August and is scheduled to be completed by the end of September 2006. The users have been kept informed, and will be given a minimum of a week's notice prior to the change going ahead. From a user perspective these changes are minor and will be done on a faculty by faculty basis with minimal disruption. The end of GrangeNet has been anticipated for a while, given that AARNet3 now exists with higher speeds, better resilience and better features. For more information on AARNet3, the next generation network that connects all Australian universities to the internet, please go to the AARNet3 homepage Monash built a separate physical network for GrangeNet users, with a view to providing the best access and maximum flexibility to experiment with new technology and research. ITS plans to retain the separate network in Clayton and Caulfield campuses disconnected from the production network to trial and experiment with new technologies. What is GrangeNet? | Status and Reach | Evolution What is GrangeNet?GrangeNet - GRid And Next GEneration NETwork. GrangeNet is a high performance experimental network for data-intensive research applications. It connects research groups in Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, and, through a now operational inter-connect to the CeNTIE network, Perth. Through AARNet's direct high capacity international links, GrangeNet has high capacity connection to equivalent advanced research networks around the world. Importantly for Monash researchers, GrangeNet also connects to the VPAC high performance computing facility in Melbourne. Status and ReachAs of 10 July 2003, the GrangeNet service was extended from the GrangeNet PoP in Flinders St to our Victorian College of Pharmacy site in Parkville, where it is currently undergoing configuration & commissioning trials. Over the next few weeks, GrangeNet will be extended to the following Monash campuses:
Before the end of the year, user groups at the above 5 sites will all be connected. There are no plans or capability to deploy native GrangeNet services to other Monash campuses in the short-to-medium term. See Benefits for Monash University for more information. Long-term EvolutionIt is expected, in roughly the 2 to 5 years-out period, that GrangeNet will merge back into the production network, first within the LAN and eventually within the WAN, and even the national backbone, as GrangeNet-style technologies and capacities become more widely available/affordable. |
