Guidance for data port selection for Closed Circuit Television (CCTV)

ITS Network Infrastructure Services (NIS) will be able to assist with the right network data port solution/selection for the CCTV (though it's not a service ITS provides). In addition, Monash Security will be able to recommend a solution for the CCTV and Digital Video Recorders (DVR).

Recommendations

That Monash Security / Traffic and Network Infrastructure Services (NIS) are aware of the CCTV implementation. Indicating the requirements through HEAT (for example: a secured subnet, remote access etc) will help the NIS team provide the correct subnet, IP address range and, if required, the guidelines for remote access to the CCTV.

These are the questions the departments and faculties need to ask themselves before investing into the CCTV.

  1. Does the CCTV need to be on a secure subnet?
  2. Is there a requirement for third party vendors to gain access to the CCTV?
  3. Will there be a requirement for the CCTV to be managed remotely?
  4. Do you want Monash University Security to monitor, view and manage the CCTV?

From this, the benefits are as follows:

  • Help mitigate any risks and issues post implementation of the CCTV

  • NIS will have first hand knowledge of the customers expectations

  • Monash Security will be aware of the implementation and be able to recommend the right CCTV solution for the customer

  • Customers are well informed of the proposed implementation

  • Customer requirements and expectations are met

  • The right solution is implemented, which will reduce ongoing maintenance and upgrade cost

  • Consistency with Monash University's standards and best practice ensuring future compatibility
