New Applications and System Evaluation Process on the Monash University network

The following information will provide key stakeholders on how to ensure any new applications, with the assistance from Information Technology Services (ITS) Network Infrastructure Services (NIS) can effectively work and successfully operate on the Monash University network.

By taking part in the service, this will provide ITS NIS first hand knowledge of the proposed "new application", to ensure that the application is supportable on the Monash network.

In collaboration with faculties and departments, this will provide an opportunity to investigate and highlight any possible impacts before proceeding from a test environment to production. This will help mitigate any risks of the "new application" will have on the Monash University network.

The process for the following service should be part of an implementation project. The evaluation process will ensure that the proposed application has been adequately assessed and analysed for operability, risks and consequences.

The evaluation process covers the following areas: (Please note the time frame provided will vary which will be dependent on the application required to be tested on the Monash network)

Evaluation process

1. Client logs a request

Before the evaluation process can begin, a HEAT network request enquiry through to ITS Network Infrastructure Services (NIS) must be logged by the client.

Log the call category as Network Request and call type as Evaluate Network Impact of a New System or Service.

2. Evaluation

This will take up to five days to complete. This requires an evaluation of the application behaviour on the network which can either be conducted in a test and/or production environment.

3. Setup and Testing

This should be allowed up to six weeks . The setup/testing process is an assessment in conjunction with faculties/departments and ITS. The ITS NIS Department will participate as a member of the project team providing technical assistance with any process, standards, policies and/or change management issues. The setup and testing will consist of:

  1. Performance testing over the network from a clients perspective to the service required
  2. Check and ensure that the protocols utilised by the application meet ITS policies and guidelines
  3. Ensure there are no issues with traffic security
  4. Making sure the application can co-exist with other network traffic (example SAP, Calista, file sharing, VoIP, back up etc)

From this, any issues will be highlighted after completing the setup and testing stage.

4. Report

A report will be provided to both ITS and faculties/departments as a baseline and confidence indicator for implementing the new application. This will also outline any issues and including a recommendation.

As indicated, this is a free service and there are no costs associated for utilising the service provided by ITS NIS. ITS NIS welcomes departments and faculties to integrate their service improvements as part of our service standards, policies and protocols.
