Temporary services

At various times Monash University faculty departments and staff may require temporary network services. An example of this situation may be the relocation of staff to temporary offices during renovations or building refurbishments.

There are a number of issues that ITS and staff need to consider when providing temporary solutions

  • A temporary solution is often assumed to be the cheaper option; this is often not the case.
  • Potential OH&S issues with equipment and cabling exposed in office areas.
  • The cost of ongoing support for the non-standard temporary solution and being able to identify and repair faults efficiently in these non-standard installations.
  • Ensuring temporary solutions don't unintentionally become permanent solutions and create ongoing non-standard support issues as described above.

The recommended and most effective way to provide temporary network services is for ITS to establish a wireless service in the temporary location. A wireless service

  • Can become a permanent solution without any of the non-standard support issues.
  • May already be available in the temporary location covered by existing Wireless Access Points.
  • Eliminates the potential OH&S issues with equipment and exposed cabling.

For assistance in establishing temporary network services please contact your faculty IT support or submit a request to ITS.
