Newsgroup Naming Conventions
Collabra discussion groups are widely used across Monash for teaching
and learning purposes, administrative purposes, committee proceedings
and social activities. Due to the varied uses of collabra discussion
groups, the following naming convention has been implemented.
Class Newsgroups
Discussion groups relating to formal courses of study are identified
by the following convention:
classes.faculty.department.subjectcode.year-teachingperiod
Examples:
Discussion group names would be:
classes.arts.plb.ids2001.01-01
classes.arts.plb.phl1070.01-01
Extensions may be used, such as:
classes.arts.plb.ids2001.01-01.tutorial01
classes.arts.plb.ids2001.01-01.tutorial02
classes.arts.plb.ids2001.01-01.group01
classes.arts.plb.ids2001.01-01.group02
classes.arts.plb.ids2001.00-01.announce
classes.arts.plb.ids2001.00-01.news
Although groups may be created with any desired name, common group
uses and names are, for example:
- groups for announcements (Staff-to-Student information flow) are
commonly suffixed 'announce'
- groups for open discussion amongst staff and students are
commonly suffixed 'forum' or 'discussion'
- groups for discussion relating to material covered in tutorials
are commonly suffixed 'tutorial' (sometimes with a group number
appended)
Non-teaching discussion groups
The locations of non-teaching discussion groups will be:
faculty.department[.area].groupname
