How to set up Monash Newsgroups in Mozilla Thunderbird

This document will guide you through the steps to configure Thunderbird and subscribe it to Monash Newsgroups.

How to set up a Monash Newsgroup Account in Thunderbird

  1. Create a new Newsgroup account: File > New > Account
  2. Select Newsgroup Account; press Next
  3. Enter your name and your email address; press Next
  4. Enter the Newsgroup Server as collabra1.monash.edu.au and press Next
  5. Enter the Account name (eg Monash Newsgroups). This is a descriptive label that appears in Thunderbird. Press Next
  6. Press Finish

How to subscribe to a Monash Newsgroup in Thunderbird

  1. Select your newsgroup by pressing the descriptive label you assigned when setting up.
  2. Right mouse click and select Subscribe, or select Manage newsgroup subscriptions from the right panel.

  3. A list of available newsgroups should be displayed. If your newsgroup is unavailable, press Refresh to obtain a fresh list of newsgroups.
  4. Enter part of the newsgroup name into the Show items that contain: field. (eg. for any Law newsgroup enter "Law") or scroll and select the newsgroup from the list
  5. Select the newsgroup and press Subscribe. The newsgroup's checkbox should now be checked.
  6. Once all the newsgroups have been selected, press OK to apply the new subscriptions.

Your authcate username and password will be required for all newsgroups.
