Creating a dial-up connection - Windows XP

Windows XP provides a ‘Connection Wizard’ which can be accessed as follows:

  1. Select Start > Control Panel > Network Connections

  2. From the Network Tasks menu on the left,
    select Create a new connection

  3. Select Next

     
  4. Select Connect to the network at my workplace > Next

     
  5. Select Dial-up connection
    Select Next

     
  6. Enter the name Monash-Dial-Access
    Select Next.

     
  7. Enter the phone number 0198333839 (without spaces)
    Select Next

      
  8. Select Add a shortcut
    Select Finish

You will now need to customize this connection for the Monash Dial-up service.

  1. Right Click Monash-Dial-Access
  2. Select Properties
  3. Select Security tab
    Select Advanced
    Select Settings

     
  4. From the Data encryption box
    select Optional encryption
    Select Allow these protocols
    Select only Unencrypted password (PAP)
    Select OK

    A warning message will be displayed
    select Yes and continue

     
  5. Select Networking tab

     
  6. From the ‘Type of dial-up server I am calling’ menu, select PPP:
    Select TCP/IP
    Select General

     
  7. Click on the `General’ tab

    Check that the phone number is 0198333839 (without spaces)
    Select Options tab


     
  8. From the Dialing options box, select only:
    • Select Display progress while connecting
    • Select Prompt for name and password, certificate etc.
    Set the redialing options as you want them – the above settings can be used as a default

    Select OK

Now go to the internet proxy settings page to set this up and then go to and install the VPN software.
