Windows 95/98 Monash dial-up service setup

1. Setting up your modem

Your modem is the means by which you establish a connection to Monash and the Internet. Firstly make sure the modem is connected to your computer as per the manufacturers instructions and is switched on. If your Operating System (Windows 9x) has already been configured for your modem then the following section can be omitted.
  1. Click on Start, then Settings and then Control Panel.
  2. Double click on the Modems icon.
  3. If this is the first time you have installed a modem, the Install New Modem wizard will run automatically. Otherwise, double click on the Add button.
    FYI: A wizard is an automated program that guides you through some of the more complex tasks by presenting you with a series of simple questions.
  4. Click on Next. Windows will then check the COM ports for modems, once detected Windows will attempt to identify your modem. This process may take a minute or so to complete.
  5. If the detected modem is not your modem then click on Change button, choose your modem manufacturer from the Manufacturers list and the model from the Models list and then click on OK. If your modem is not listed and you do have a driver disk supplied by the modems manufacturer then select Have Disk, and follow the prompts. If your modem is not listed and you do not have a driver disk then select a standard modem type.
  6. You may have entered in Information pertaining your location into the Operating System before, if you have not then the Location Information window may appear. Follow the on-screen instructions paying attention to details such as your STD code, then click on Next.
  7. Click on Next button again and then click on Finish. Finally Click on OK.

2. Installing 'Dial Up Networking

As the name suggests Microsoft Dial-Up Networking allows you to use your modem to make connections to a Network, the Internet being one such Network. Important: Dial-Up Networking my have been installed when Windows was first installed. It is necessary to follow the procedures outlined below to ensure that all the appropriate components of Dial-up Networking have been installed correctly.

  1. Click on Start, then Settings and then Control Panel and double click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  2. Select the Windows Setup property tab.
  3. Select Communications from the Components list and then click on Details.
  4. Ensure Dial-Up Networking and HyperTerminal boxes are checked. Follow any instructions that may appear when you check or uncheck boxes. Click on OK.
    Important: The following steps are only required if you added components you have not previously installed such as another protocol. Otherwise, Dial-Up Networking has been installed successfully and you can proceed to the next section.
  5. Insert your Windows 9x Setup disk(s) or CD as prompted. This process will take some time.
  6. Windows may ask you for a computer and workgroup name. Type in names relevant to you, these names are not defined by Monash. For example, for Computer name enter My PC Computer and for Workgroup enter at Home. Click on Close.
  7. If you used diskettes for the installation, then remove them from your drives. In most circumstances you will be prompted to reboot your system, if not you must reboot your computer by clicking on Start, then Shut Down, then Restart and then Click on Yes.
  8. Since Dial-Up Networking is now installed, you will be asked for a user name and password to enter Windows. Enter a user name and password if you wish, the advantages of this are simple if entered then your password for dial-up access will only be accessible to you if you leave them blank anyone using your computer will have access to your dial-up connections.

3. Installing Networking

TCP/IP is the networking protocol used by computers connecting to the Internet. By using TCP/IP in association with Dial-Up Networking, your computer will be able to access all Internet based resources.
  1. Click on Start, then Settings and then Control Panel and double click on Network.
  2. If either TCP/IP or TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter is in the list of network components list then skip to point 5. Otherwise, click on Add.
  3. Then select Protocol and then click on the Add button.
  4. Select Microsoft in the Manufacturers list and TCP/IP in the list of Network Protocols. Click on OK.
  5. Select Dial Up Adapter and then click on the Properties button.
  6. Select the Bindings property tab and make sure that either TCP/IP or TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter is checked. Click on OK.
  7. Click on OK and insert Windows 9x Setup disks or CD as required. Windows should then prompt you to restart, do so by clicking on the Yes button.

4. Configuring TCP/IP for Monash Connectivity

TCP/IP Networking needs to be configured so that it uses your modem to connect to Monash.

  1. Click on Start, then Settings and then Control Panel and double click on Network.
  2. Confirm the existence of TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter is in the list of Network Components If it is, click on it. Otherwise, see if TCP/IP is in the list of Network Components. If it is there, click on it. Click on the Properties button.
  3. On the IP Address property tab, select Obtain an IP address automatically.
  4. On the WINS Configuration property tab, select Disable WINS Resolution.
  5. On the Gateway property tab, Installed gateways should be empty. If a gateway is installed then select one of the gateways from the Installed Gateways list and click on the Remove button. Repeat this process until there are no installed gateways.
  6. On the Bindings property tab, if File and printer sharing is present, ensure it is not selected. Failure to do this could result in others accessing your PC while you are connected to the Internet.
  7. On the DNS Configuration property tab, select Disable DNS.
  8. Click on OK to close the TCP/IP Properties window.
  9. Click on OK. In most circumstances you will be prompted to reboot your system, if not you must reboot your computer by clicking on Start and then Shut Down, then Restart and then Click on Yes.

5. Setting up your 'Dial Up' connection to Monash

We will now create a Dial-Up Network connection to connect to Monash. If you are a Distance Education student, or a student with a disability, Monash is your direct gateway to the Internet. Your dial-up connection will include the phone number of the Monash campus closest to you so as to avoid costly STD calls.
  1. On your desktop, double click on the My Computer icon, which is usually located in the top left of your screen, then double click on Dial-Up Networking.
  2. If this is the first time you have used Dial-Up Networking, a connection wizard will start automatically and guide you through the steps involved in making a new connection. If not, you will have to create the New connection manually, to do this double click on Make New Connection.
  3. In the name field, type in Monash.
  4. Next Select your Modem from the Select a modem drop down list. Click on Next.
  5. Fill in the area code and phone number of the campus nearest to you, these numbers are available on the quick reference sheet.
  6. From the Country code drop down list select Australia. Click on Next.
  7. Click on Finish.

6. Configuring your connection

We now configure your Monash Dial-Up Networking connection for the Monash Network. These should be all be set correctly be default, but it is worth checking to be sure.
  1. Right click on the Monash icon in the Dial-Up Networking window and select Properties.
  2. If the phone number of the Monash campus you wish to dial is in the same area code as you, uncheck Use country code and area code.
  3. Click on the Configure button. Make sure that the maximum speed is set to nothing greater than 57600 then click OK.
  4. Click on the Server Types button. In the Server Type window make sure that Type of Dial-Up Server is set to PPP. And that TCP/IP is the only box checked.
  5. Click on the TCP/IP Settings button. In the TCP/IP Settings window make sure that the Server assigned IP address is selected. Select Specify name server addresses and enter the following information: Primary DNS 130.194.1.99 Secondary DNS 130.194.7.99 Make sure that Use IP header compression and Use default gateway on remote network are checked. Click on OK to close the TCP/IP Settings window.
  6. Click on OK to close the Server Types window. Click on OK to close the Monash Connection window

7. Configuring your proxies in your browser

You will now need to configure the proxy settings in your browser.
