Macintosh OS9 Monash dial-up service setup

1. Creating a new connection

  1. Go to the TCP/IP Control Panel, found by clicking the Apple Icon, selecting the menu named 'Control Panel', and clicking on TCP/IP.
  2. When the TCP/IP Control Panel is open, click the File menu at the top of the screen, and choose Configurations.
  3. This will pop up a box that contains your current dial up configurations. Click on Default so it is highlighted, then click on the duplicate button.
  4. Enter 'Monash via modem' as the name of the duplicate connection, and click OK.
  5. You will now see your new connection appear in the list. Click on Monash via modem so it is highlighted, then click on the Make Active button.
  6. This will pop up a 'TCP/IP' configuration box. Select the following options: Connect via: PPP, Configure: Using PPP Server. Close the window and click Save.
  7. Go to the Modem Control Panel by clicking the Apple Icon, selecting the menu named 'Control Panel', and clicking on Modem.
  8. Choose the following options:
    • Select your modem from the list.
    • Set the sound option to 'on'
    • Set the dialling option to 'tone'
    • Put a tick in the box named 'Ignore dial tone'

2. Configuring your browser

Choose your browser:

  • Netscape Navigator/Communicator
    1. Once you have opened Netscape, click on 'Edit', then 'Preferences'.
    2. In the Preferences window, click the arrow next to the Advanced category at the left of the window.
    3. Click on the Proxies tab.
    4. Click Automatic proxy configuration, and enter the following address in to the box: http://www.monash.edu.au/proxy.pac
    5. Click Ok to confirm the changes.

  • Internet Explorer
    1. Once you have opened Internet Explorer, click on 'Edit', then 'Preferences'.
    2. In the Preferences window, click the arrow next to the Advanced category at the left of the window.
    3. Click on the Proxies tab.
    4. Click Web proxy, and enter the following address in to the box: proxy.monash.edu.au
    5. Make sure that the 'Use Web Proxy for all' box is ticked.
    6. Click Ok to confirm the changes.

3. Dialling in to Monash

  1. Open the Remote Access control panel, by clicking the Apple icon, selecting Control Panel, then clicking on Remote Access.
  2. In the Remote Access window, type in your Monash Authcate username and password. Click 'save password'.
  3. Fill in the phone number of the campus closest to you, and click next. See the Phone numbers page for which number to use.
    • Note: If your nearest campus is not within the local call area you may be charged for STD calls.
  4. Click Connect.
  5. Once your modem has finished dialling in to Monash, you will be presented with the Remote Access window, that has a timer showing how long you have been connected.
  6. You are now connected to Monash. You may open your browser and perform online tasks.
  7. When you have finished using the dial-up connection, open the Remote Access control panel, by clicking the Apple icon, selecting Control Panel, then clicking on Remote Access. Click Disconnect to close the connection.

Note: If your connection is idle for 15 minutes, the system will automatically disconnect you.
