Windows 2000 Monash dial-up service setup

1. Creating a PPP Connection

  1. The PPP software that is built-into Windows 2000 is called Dial-Up Networking. To use this software, you must first create it before a connection could be established.
  2. Click on the Start menu, select Programs followed by Accessories then Communications. From the menu, select Network and Dial-Up Connections.
  3. If you have used this software before, double click on the Make New Connection icon to start the Network Connection Wizard. If this is the first time you have used Dial-Up Networking, the Network Connection Wizard will appear. Click on the Next button and proceed to the next step.
  4. From the Network Connection Type screen, select Dial-up to private network then click on the Next button.
  5. In the next window, type the appropriate Monash phone number based on your location in the Phone number field.
  6. Click on Use dialing rules to enter the area code.
  7. Click on Next.
  8. From the Connection Availability screen, select Only for myself option and then on the Next button.
  9. In the field type the name you want to use for this connection, type in a unique name, like Monash University PPP then click on the Finish button.

2. Configuring Your PPP Connection

Now that you have created a Dial-Up Networking icon, you must configure it to connect to Monash University.
  1. From the Connect Monash University PPP window click on the Properties button.
  2. Under the Networking tab, make sure that PPP:Windows 95/98/NT 4/2000, Internet is selected and then click on the Settings button.
  3. In the PPP Settings window, verify that Enable LCP extensions and Enable Software Compression are both checked then click on OK.
  4. Under "Components checked are used by this connection", select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click on the Properties button. The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window will open. Click on the Advanced button.
  5. From the DNS tab, click on the Add button under DNS server addresses, in order of use. Type in the numbers 130.194.1.99 then click on Add.
  6. Click on the Add button again then type in the numbers
    130.194.7.99 then click on Add.
  7. Select Append these DNS suffixes (in order).
  8. Click on the Add button, type in monash.edu.au then click on Add.
  9. Click on the Add button again then type in its.monash.edu.au then
    click on Add.
  10. Under the DNS suffix for this connection, type in monash.edu.au.
  11. Make sure that Register this connection's addresses in DNS and Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration are both checked.

  12. Click on OK and then click on the OK button again.
  13. Click on OK to close the Monash University PPP window.
  14. If you have call waiting and wish to disable it:
    • From the Connect Monash University PPP window, click on the Properties button.
    • Under the General tab, click on Use dialing rules then click on the Rules button.
    • Select My Location then click on Edit.
    • Click on To disable call waiting, enter *44.
    • Click on the OK button, then click on OK again.
    • Click on OK to close the Monash University PPP window.

3. Connecting to Monash University

  1. Double click on the Monash University PPP icon you just created to open the Connect Monash University PPP window.
  2. Enter your username in the Username field and your password in the Password field for your Monash University computer account. Place a check mark in front of Save Password if you want Dial-Up Networking to remember your password.
  3. Click on the Dial button and your modem will dial.
  4. Windows 2000 will complete the connection and display an icon by the clock in the Windows TaskBar. If this is the first time you have established a connection, you will get a Connection Complete window. Click on Do not display this message again then click on OK. You are now ready to run any internet applications (i.e. Netscape Navigator) installed on your computer.

4. Configuring your proxies

5. Disconnecting from Monash University

  1. When you are finished, remember to disconnect the PPP connection.
  2. From the Network and Dial-up Connection window, double click
    on the Monash University PPP icon.
  3. Click on the Disconnect button.
Note: If your connection is idle for 15 minutes, the system will automatically disconnect.
