Windows XP remote access setup
1. Creating a new connection
- Go to the Control Panel, found by clicking Start,
Settings, Control Panel.
- Open Network Connections, and click Create
New Connection in the Network Tasks box (left hand side of
the screen).
- This will pop up a box that prompts you to make some selections in
regards to the connection you would like to set up. Choose the following
options, and click next after each screen:
- Connect to the internet > next
- Set up my connection manually >
next
- Connect using a dial-up modem >
next
- Enter 'Monash' as the name of your ISP, and click
next.
- Fill in the phone number of the campus closest to you, and click next.
See the Phone numbers page for which number
to use.
- Note: If your nearest campus is not within the
local call area you may be charged for STD calls.
- Enter your Authcate username and password, then your password again
to confirm. Make sure that all three boxes listed on this screen are
ticked, and click next.
- Choose 'Add a shortcut to this connection on my desktop’,
and click finish.
- Your connection has now been successfully set up to dial-in to Monash
2. Configuring your browser
Note: This step is only used for Staff,
and Postgraduate students who have access to the internet through Monash.
It is not required for those who are only accessing Monash resources (Monash
email, my.monash, webCT, etc). Most undergraduate students will not need
to configure their browser.
Choose your browser:
- Netscape Navigator/Communicator
- Once you have opened Netscape, click on 'Edit',
then 'Preferences'.
- In the Preferences window, click the plus '+'
symbol next to the Advanced category at the left
of the window.
- Click on the Proxies tab.
- Click Automatic proxy configuration, and enter
the following address in to the box: http://www.monash.edu.au/proxy.pac
- Click Ok to confirm the changes.

- Internet Explorer 5 or above
- Once you have opened Internet Explorer, click on 'Tools',
then 'Internet Options'.
- In the Internet Options window, click on the
Connections tab at the top of the window.
- Click on the Monash dialup connection,
and then click 'Settings'
- In the Settings window, tick the 'Use automatic
configuration script' box, and enter the following address
in to the box: http://www.monash.edu.au/proxy.pac
- Important: Make sure that 'Automatically detect settings'
is unchecked.
- Click Ok, and then Ok again
to close the window.
3. Dialling in to Monash
- Open the 'Monash' icon on your desktop. If there is not a 'Monash'
icon, you can find it by clicking Start, Settings,
Network Connections.
- A 'Connect to Monash' box should appear, with your
username and password already filled in. Click Dial.
- Once the modem has finished connecting, Windows should notify you
that it is connected.

- You are now connected to Monash. You may open your browser and perform
online tasks.
- When you have finished using the dial-up connection, double click
on the network icon (bottom right hand corner of the screen), and click
disconnect.
Note: If your connection is idle for 15 minutes, the system
will automatically disconnect you. |
