More information is available from the Telephone user manuals

MIDS is the general purpose website for authorised staff to search the internal telephone directory. Lists can be downloaded, e.g. into Excel, so that departments do not have to separately maintain lists locally.

Major differences between MIDS and its TelDir predecessor are:

  • It is an open-source Web-based client that is available anywhere anytime on any client system, even at an internet café. As opposed to TelDir, which was only available on campus, and only on staff desktops running Netware4.

  • It provides a full window into the University's organizational structure and hierarchy, in the familiar graphical "tree structure" as used by other common Monash desktop applications such as Windows Explorer and MMS. As opposed to the narrow "letter-box" view that TelDir provided into the same information.

Privacy:

Like its predecessor TelDir, the current version of MIDS is not available to the general public. It requires a valid Staff Authcate username and password to gain access.

Also, records that are marked in the MIDS database as "silent" are not available from the MIDS interface, and are only available to switchboard and other authorised (ITS) staff.

In the future, when MIDS becomes "user rights aware", it will hand out different levels of information depending on the access rights of the individual.

Compatibility:

MIDS was designed for use with Internet Explorer, Mozilla and Firefox, in line with emerging Monash and industry standards at the time when the application's specification was finalised.

MIDS is not intended, recommended or supported for use with Netscape 4.x and will produce unsatisfactory or unpredictable results.

If using Netscape 4.x: please refer to your local IT Support staff to upgrade your computer to a compatible browser.
