Flexible Firewall System

Description

This project is installing infrastructure with intelligent ‘deep packet inspection' devices. This differs from the current system in that it can understand and interpret for example, the major voice/video conferencing protocols while blocking other attacks to computers on the network.

Without this style of firewall Monash will continue to experience difficulties using VoIP, Video Conferencing and other similar streaming media applications as well as difficulties using Second Life, and other similar applications used in Teaching.

In 2008 this project will carry out a needs analysis through University wide consultation, issue an RFP and decide on a technical architecture. By the end of 2008 the solution will be implemented for ‘server subnets' protecting the core sections of the network. In 2009, the solution will be rolled out to the remainder of the network providing total coverage.
