Voice over IP

Description

The existing Monash phone system was originally deployed in 1987 and is in need of upgrading as it is aging and going out of vendor support. As this occurs, supporting the existing system is becoming increasingly difficult and it is becoming difficult to source spare parts for incremental expansions. The situation is further compounded by some of the current systems being at almost at full capacity and further expansion may require the need to invest in legacy equipment at considerable cost.

In order to mitigate the risks of having aging and unsupported equipment this project proposes to replace the existing analogue PABX system with VoIP technology which will be more reliable, supportable and enable new communications facilities/mechanisms such as desktop video conferencing, work group collaboration and staff mobility across Monash University.

The VoIP Project is one of the many being coordinated by the Integrated Collaboration Environment (ICE) Program.
The ICE Program provides a single governance structure, guiding the coordinated development and release of a suite of communication and collaboration products and services. The VoIP Project is delivering the Monash Phone and Monash Fax services as part of this Program.

In order to deliver the new phone and fax services at Monash, the VoIP project comprises of a number of sub-projects:

  • Core Infrastructure
  • Phone Deployment
  • FAX under VoIP
  • Billing
  • Call Centre
  • Voicemail
  • Videoconferencing
