Computer viruses

What is a computer virus?

A computer virus is a program that replicates itself. It does this by copying itself onto another program, computer or document. Viruses can be sent in attachments to an email file, be present on a disk or CD or be hidden in websites, such as advertisements or popups (such as those asking you to install software).

Whilst some viruses can be harmless or simply annoying, many can leak, alter or destroy your data. In more extreme cases, they can even crash your computer so you lose or cannot access your work.
