If you have an email address you have probably received unwanted
and unsolicited e-mail called spam. For strategies on how to deal
with the problem see how to manage spam
effectively.
Staff
need to be aware that spamming (sending bulk, junk mail) or sending
abusive or offensive email is in breach of the
Acceptable
IT use policy - Staff under which your email account is granted.
The university does not monitor email traffic, but can identify
anyone in breach of the policy when there is a complaint. Failure
to comply with the policy may result in disciplinary action.
Follow these tips below for safe email handling.
• Do NOT open email attachments that you were not expecting
– even if you know the sender. The sender’s details
can be faked.
• Do NOT click on a website address in an email you were
not expecting.
• Banks never send emails asking you to log in to your
internet banking account to change or check your details. These
are fakes and someone is trying to capture your bank account password
or PIN number.
• Do NOT run, download or forward any unsolicited executables,
documents, spreadsheets, etc. Anything that runs on your PC or
laptop should be virus checked and approved first.
• NEVER open any files with a double file extension, (e.g.
iamavirus.txt.vbs). Under normal circumstances you should never
need to receive or use these.
• AVOID downloading executables or documents from the
internet. These are often used to spread computer viruses.
