Step 16: Using Zone Alarm

Once you begin using Zone Alarm you will find from time to time programs on your computer will want access to the Internet. At which point, Zone Alarm will alert you that a program is requesting access.

Using Zone Alarm

In some cases you might recognise the program requesting Internet access and realise that such a request is perfectly normal. Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Outlook Express are all examples of perfectly valid programs which require Internet access in order to function. The issue arises when programs you are not familiar with try to access the Internet.

By clicking on the MORE INFO button, Zone Alarm will search it's database for the program in question to try an identify what the program is.

Alert Advisor

If the program in question can be identified, Zone Alarm will tell you it's function and whether or not it is safe to allow. If it is safe to use, you might want to tick the box REMEMBER THIS SETTING so you are not prompted for alerts by that application every time it tries to access the Internet.

Other times, a program may not be easily identified.

Alert Advisor

If you are unsure of what the program is you are always better off DENYING that program access. You can always change the preferences later by going into the PROGRAM CONTROLS menu on the left hand side of Zone Alarm, locating the program in question and changing the DENY setting to ALLOW. If you allow all programs to run without checking first to see if they need Internet access you run the risk of allowing a trojan/virus or worm to run rampant on your system and impact on other systems. In the above example, Sophos is the anti virus product Monash University uses. A quick Internet search confirms it is an anti virus product and requires Internet access to obtain updates. As such, it is safe to allow it access.

If you ever want to try and find out for yourself what the program is, you can always try searching the web (http://www.google.com) for information regarding the service that Zone Alarm is alerting you over.
