Passwords at Monash

Your login details (username and password) should be treated like your bank PIN number and protected at all costs. You are responsible for this information and should never share your password with anyone. Sharing your password is a breach of the Acceptable IT use policy and can lead to disciplinary action.

Why is having a good password important?

Passwords are the "keys" that unlock computers. If someone has your password and logs into your account you will be held responsible for their actions. A third party can cause havoc to you by deleting files, reading private emails, sending offensive or abusive emails, sending spam emails or entering into financial transactions on your behalf and running up large bills.

Change your password often

As passwords can be captured and cracked over time, ITS recommends you change your passwords every 3 months. This makes it more difficult for any hackers to get access to your account.

Monash IT systems are set to check passwords when they are changed to ensure that they are difficult to guess, either by another human, or a program meant to guess passwords.  This helps ensure that your account cannot be broken into and your data (documents, programs, etc) stolen or deleted.

Set your Personal Information Word (PIW)

Your PIW can be used to identify you if you have forgotten your Authcate password and wish to create a new one. This will save you having to contact the Service Desk for assistance.
