Sophos installation for Mac OS X

Sophos for OS X is available for Macintosh computers both on campus and at home. To use the software at home you must have an Authcate username and password.

Requirements

  • Mac OS X 10.4 or greater
  • Intel - based Macintosh (32bit and 64bit)
  • PowerPC - based Macintosh
  • Minimum 77 MB free disk space
  • Minimum 128 MB RAM

Installation

  1. Please remove any previous versions of Sophos from your MAC. To uninstall Sophos from your Mac run the Remove Sophos Anti-Virus.pkg package located on your Mac: Macintosh Hardrive - Library - Sophos Anti-Virus
  2. Download the installer disk image.
  3. Mount the disk image and run the Sophos Anti-Virus.mpkg installer.

  4. When the installer launches, select continue.

  5. Select a destination volume for Sophos - generally Macintosh HD.

  6. Select Install to begin the installation.

  7. The installer will begin copying files to the destination volume.

  8. Once completed, select Close to finish the installation.

Configuration

Sophos has already been customised for on campus use and no additional configuration should be neccessary. If you are running Sophos at home you will need to configure the AutoUpdater to use your Authcate credentials as follows:

  1. Select Open Preferences from the Sophos menu.

  2. To change any of the settings you may need to authenticate by clicking on the padlock icon in the bottom left hand corner. This requires the account name and password for an administrative account on the Macintosh.

  3. By default, the User name and Password fields are blank.

  4. Enter in your Authcate credentials and save the settings.

  5. There is a secondary server details - Secondary Server Tab.

  6. Enter in your Authcate credentials and save the settings.

    NOTE: when you change your Authcate password at Monash, you will also need to change it in the Sophos application.

Updating

By default, Sophos will automatically check for updates every 60 minutes. However, it is a good idea to run a manual update after the first initial installation.

  1. Select Update Now from the Sophos menu.

  2. The updater will connect to the server and download any available program and virus definition updates.
