Licensing Definitions

Artistic: Software copyrighted by the author with terms for distribution and modification.

BSD: Software copyrighted by the University of California, Berkeley or similar where the author retains copyright.

Commercial: This type of software usually requires purchase by the individual or department wishing to use it. Vendor retains exclusive rights to the product.

Distributable: Generally a specific license for the software which allows freedom to distribute the software to others. Can be similar to the GPL.

GNU General Public License: This license guarantees freedom to share and change software distributed using it, with restrictions.

GNU Library General Public License: This license applies to libraries and guarantees freedom to share and change software distributed using it, with restrictions.

In House: Software written by Monash, and may be freely used within Monash.

MIT: Massachusetts Institute of Technology license. Permission to use, copy, modify and distribute the software provided the MIT copyright notice remains.

None: No copyright, belongs to no one and everyone.

Public Domain: Software which is free of copyright and free for common use.

QPL: The Q Public License (GPL-like).

UCB: Software copyrighted by the University of California, Berkeley or similar where the author retains copyright.

Unknown: Unknown.
