Configuring Netscape to use the Monash Directory Service

Prerequisites

This process requires Netscape Communicator version 4.0 or greater. It is not required for the Monash-customised Netscape software, which already has this configured. The following information is for Communicator v4.7x.

Instructions

1. Go to the "Communicator|Address Book..." menu option.

2. Go to the "File|New Directory..." menu option.

This will bring up a dialog box prompting for the following fields:

Description: Monash University Directory Service
LDAP Server: directory.monash.edu.au
Search Root: o=Monash University, c=AU
Port Number: 389 [ ] Secure
Maximum Number of Hits: 100

(leave 'Secure' unchecked)

When you have filled out the dialog box, it should look like this:

Then click on [OK]. The configuration is complete!

3. To finish off its advisable to check that your settings are configured to use both your personal address book and the Monash Directory Service with the personal address book searched first.

Go to the "Edit|Preferences..." menu option.

Click on the "|> Mail & Newsgroups" Category, which should expand the list of options out to include "Addressing" Click on "Addressing", to bring up a list of the currently supported Directory servers.

Ensure that the "Directory Server" box has been ticked and that the "Monash Directory Service" is selected as shown above. ITS recommend invoking the "Use the address and do not search the directory" option if you want Netscape to search your personal address book before searching the Monash Directory Service for addresses.

Then click on [OK]. The configuration is complete!
