Using the Monash Directory Service

The following are some common ways of using the Monash Directory Service:
  • Using the built-in Directory feature of Netscape 4.x or greater, as described on this page.
  • Using a web browser to access a search page.
  • Using the directory service to provide authentication or other information to an application.

Using Netscape to perform directory searches

First of all, you will need to have a copy of Netscape which is configured for the Monash Directory Service or configure your browser by hand.

Assuming you've got the right directory setup, simply choose "Address Book" from the "Communicator" menu in Netscape Messenger. To do a simple search for a Monash person by name, click on "Monash Directory Service" and then type the name you are searching for in the box called "Show names containing:".

For a more detailed search, click on "Edit" - > "Search For". This will allow you to search by department and other fields.

Web interfaces

There are a number of directory search pages on the web, including the Monash search page.

Applications

Many applications can benefit from the Monash Directory Service, which may provide them with user authentication, information about Monash staff, or both. The use of the directory throughout the university as a consistent source of information for everything from web-enabled applications to internet mailing lists is encouraged.

One common use is web authentication. The Monash directory can be used to provide security to a web site by verifying that the username and password typed in by a user match those in the directory.
