Macintosh access to Netware filesWhat You NeedAny Macintosh with an OS later than 8.5 that has IP services can see and use the NetWare shared files. The problem with IP access is locating the DNS name or IP address of the file server where the NetWare shared files are stored. This browsing service was normally suppied by the Chooser and used AppleTalk or EtherTalk between the Macintosh and the NetWare server. The Monash network no longer supports this method. This web page has been specially constructed to replace the browsing service for Macintosh users to locate the NetWare shared files of Monash faculties and divisions. Although it is manually updated from time to time and not dynamically as the old service was, if you are viewing this web page from a Macintosh using a web browser such as Safari, Netscape or Internet Explorer, clicking on the web links in the table below should directly connect you to the NetWare shared files of the selected faculty. Logging InYou will be prompted for your username and a password before access is granted.
The username is the same as your authcate account, but the password is likely to be different. Select the USR volume to see your faculty share files.
Once the NetWare share is mounted on your desktop, you can use the usual control-click to create an alias of the volume itself or folders within it. That alias will act as a shortcut and will get the share connected without having to come to this page again. Rights to Read and ModifyThe folders you can see and the files you can see and/or modify depend on your username and your group memberships. These rights are managed by your faculty IT support staff. For more information on group membership and folder visibility look at VGroups. Simple PasswordsThe password used to access the NetWare shared files is referred to as the "Novell simple password". This is seperate from the normal Novell password used by Windows workstations, however it will be set to the same value if set via the MDS website. Connection TableNote that these links will only work from an Apple Macintosh running a web browser such as Safari, FireFox or Internet Explorer Administration Divisions Centre for Learning and Teaching Support Faculty of Art and Design Faculty of Arts Faculty of Business and Economics Faculty of Education Faculty of Engineering Faculty of Information Technology Faculty of Law Faculty of Medicine Faculty of Medicine (Cadmium users) Faculty of Science IT Services Division Library School of Physics & Materials Engineering Novell R: Drive for eResearch What about access from Home or some other Location? For security purposes, direct access to the NetWare files servers is blocked or firewalled from the internet. If you wish to access your NetWare shared files from somewhere other than the Monash network itself, you will need to load and run the Virtual Private Network (VPN) software. Once connected via the VPN, this page is still visible and the connection table links and alias re-connection methods described above will both work. How does it work?Additional technical Information about the server setup and configuration of this service, and the management tools for IT Support staff that administer it for your faculty or division is also available. |
