Taking control of your departmental website with .htaccess

Summary

The .htaccess file allows a webmaster to perform many tasks within a website including:

  • Specify custom error documents
  • Add special document handlers and MIME types
  • Set environment variables
  • Redirect URLs from one to another
  • Rewrite one URL into another
  • Restrict documents to specific people

This presentation introduces the .htaccess file and gives examples of usage within the Monash ITS environment.
