Introduction

There is little doubt that the popularity of the Web has been enhanced by the ability to use graphics to enhance and present information.

In theory, there is no limit to the kinds of graphic formats that can be used on the Web.

In practise, there are limitations:

• browser capabilities (and availability of plug-ins for multimedia formats)
• some graphical data is best suited to a particular format
• bandwidth and other usability issues
• cross-platform differences (colour palettes, gamma)

This presentation will give an overview of these limitations, suggesting the best ways to use graphics on your web site.
