Having problems connecting?
Step 1 - Before you start
- Ensure your laptop has a WiFi compatible wireless network
card
Some new laptops have built-in wireless network cards, and you will
not need to buy a separate one.
Note: The ITS Service Desk will not be able to assist you if you do
not have a compatible wireless network card.
- Ensure that your Authcate account is valid
To access Monash-Wireless-Net you need a current working Monash Authcate
computer account. If it isn't working contact the ITS
Service Desk.
- Check your wireless card is properly installed
In Windows:
- Go to start > settings >
control panel > network connections
- You should see your wireless card in the list and it should be
set to Enabled. If it isn't right click on it and
set it to Enabled.
- Some machines have a separate switch on the laptop that turns
the wireless on and off. Ensure this is switched on.
We also highly recommend that you download the
latest drivers for your network card from your manufacturer's website.
- Ensure your laptop security is up-to-date
Relevant security information is available on the IT Security at Home
websites for staff
and students.
- Access the internet for wireless card registration
If you are a student you will need internet access to self register
their wireless card.
Staff don't need internet access as they don't self register.
- Charge your laptop battery
Your laptop needs sufficient battery life. Ensure you charge your battery
for at least an hour or have a power cord and access to a power point.
Step 2 - Register your wireless
card
- Find the Ethernet address of the wireless network card.
Sometimes the Ethernet address is written on the back of the wireless
card which is very helpful when using a removable card. Otherwise you
can find out via your computer.
To do this in Windows:
- Go to start > run
- Type cmd and press Ok
- At the new prompt, type ipconfig /all
(for Windows 95/98 type winipcfg)
- Under the wireless heading look for 'Physical Address'
(ie Physical Address: 00-40-96-AE-AE-F3)
- Remove the hyphens for the Ethernet/MAC address
(ie 004096AEAEF3)
- To see a screen shot of this process go to
self help.
- Register your wireless card
- Go to: http://addhost.its.monash.edu/cgi-bin/register
- Enter your Authcate username and password
- You should see a hostname similar to: <your username>-wlan-self.faculty.
- Enter the Ethernet address of your card (without hyphens or spaces)
- Enter your contact email address or mobile phone number.
- Click Register.
Card registration takes a minimum of 15 minutes and up to one hour to process. While waiting, you can complete steps 3 and 4.
Step 3 - Download and install
VPN software
You will need to use Monash's Virtual Private Network (VPN) software
to connect to the Monash network.
If you have access to an existing internet connection you can download
and install the VPN (16 MB) immediately, otherwise you will be able to
access the VPN download page once your wireless card has been registered.
Go to: https://secure.monash.edu/its/vpn/
- Select your operating environment.
- Follow the instructions.
- You must restart your computer after running the setup file for the
VPN to install properly.
Step 4 - Configure your Internet browser
Configuring your Internet browser allows your computer to access the Internet through the Monash network.
Refer to the Configuring browsers for internet use page for instructions on your specific browser.
