Peer-to-peer file sharing not permitted

Copyright protection is taken extremely seriously at Monash University. When you download, reproduce, share or email material on the web, you risk breaching copyright law if you are not aware of your rights and obligations.

The use or installation of peer-to-peer file sharing programs such as Kazaa and Bit Torrent is not permitted at Monash, unless you are given explicit permission from Head of School for legitimate research purposes. This prohibition includes peer-to-peer programs on your laptop when using Monash's wireless network. The university can easily identify when you are using or installing peer-to-peer programs.

If copyright owners take legal action against a student for copyright infringement, the student is personally liable for damages and costs and may be excluded from the university. Monash University will not defend students if they use Monash resources to carry out unlawful actions.

For further information, visit the Monash Copyright website.
