Enhanced computing services for postgraduate research studentsMonash University recognises that postgraduate students who undertake research for a higher degree qualification require enhanced IT resources to help them successfully complete their studies. The enhanced services available to postgraduate research students, include:
Some of these services, such as disk and mail quota, are automatically granted upon admission to a postgraduate research course. Other services are activated by Faculty IT staff on a "by request" basis. Enhanced email optionsPostgraduate research students are automatically granted the following email service:
Enhanced dial-up account serviceThe dial-up modem service for postgraduate research students allows them to connect to the external internet using a dial-up connection from home. Other students using the dial-up modem service are normally only able to access Monash websites and online resources. To request access to enhanced dial-up services, contact your local faculty IT support staff. Flexible internet optionsIt is recognised that postgraduate research students may have different requirements to other students where internet usage is concerned. Whilst students may be held accountable for excessive internet usage, students can discuss their usage requirements directly with their supervisor and faculty IT support. Printing subsidyTo assist postgraduate research students with increased printing requirements, faculties may grant extra printing credit, deposited directly into the student’s printing account. Students need to discuss their additional printing requirements directly with their supervisor and faculty IT staff. When a student’s thesis has been examined, any unused subsidy may be withdrawn. Additional network drive spacePostgraduate research students are automatically given 100MB space in their Novell U: drive to store their work on. The normal student network drive allocation is 25MB. For backup purposes, it is recommended that students store at least one copy of their work on their U: drive. Collaboration areasPostgraduate research students may request that a collaborative work area be created on the network. A collaboration area is a shared area on the student network drives, separate to your personal U: drive. This area can be configured for access by the research student, supervisor(s), or any other Monash users working with them. To request a collaboration area, contact your faculty IT support staff. Extended computer account accessPostgraduate research students will be able to use their computer accounts to access the internet until they have finalised their completed thesis with their supervisor. When the thesis has been completed, the student will have 90 days access* to Monash-only IT services to do such things as:
* Student accounts = 90 days, staff-like accounts = 30 days. Wireless network accessWireless access points are also now available at most postgraduate student areas, as well as all libraries, giving postgraduate students ready access to the Monash data network via their laptops from these locations.
