Install a firewall
Check with your local IT Support to see if this is done for you.

Install once when you get a new computer

 

Install and keep up-to-date freee anti-virus software
Check for the Blue Shield Icon ( Sophos Icon ) in the bottom right hand corner of your screen. If this isn't present, contact your local it Support.

Install once, check that it is working daily

 

Patch your computer
Companies such as Microsoft and Apple release minor fixes and updates of their software, called "patches" often to fix faults in their software. By regularly installing updates to fix these problems, you help to keep your computer safe from Viruses and Worms.

Be familiar with these six tips for safe email handling.

Do not trust websites (especially pop-up windows) that suggest you install any type of software.

Beware of malicious emails and webpages
Malicious emails, email attachments, and web pages can sometimes bypass virus scans and firewalls, and therefore remain undetected by security patches.

Scan for computer viruses
A computer virus is a program that replicates itself. It does this by copying itself onto another program, computer or document. The Monash free anti-virus software is configured to reguarly scan your pc for viruses.

Password selection and management
Your login details (username and password) should be treated like your bank PIN number and protected at all costs. You are responsible for this information.

Backup your data
Reccommended you backup daily.
You can save and copy files to the Monash network U: drive. The Monash network U: drive is also backed up each evening, however for mission critical work and piece of mind, ITS recommends you investigate and take additional backups as well.

 

Backups are done daily for you when saving work to U: drive

 

Carrying your around data with you
Many options exist for carrying your data around with USB Flash Drives, CDs and external hard drives
For Sensitive Data: It is recommended that you use USB Flash drives which have encryption to protect your work. When used properly this will assist in preventing other people from accessing should you accidentally loose a device.
